Simple homemade electrolyte drink (labouraid) for labour, postpartum & beyond!⁣

An electrolyte drink can be incredibly useful during labor and postpartum, both of which are physically demanding times requiring additional mineral support.⁣
⁣
There are several great electrolyte or labouraid products available that you can buy, but if you’re looking for a simple option to make yourself at home, this is it!
⁣
Electrolytes (namely sodium, potassium, and magnesium) are vital for muscle function, energy levels, and the nervous system, among many other essential processes.⁣
⁣
Being properly hydrated with not only water, but also these minerals is crucial for:⁣
⁣
🍹 Facilitating effective muscle contraction & relaxation during labour & birth ⁣
⁣
🍹Supporting & maintaining milk production postpartum if breastfeeding⁣
⁣
🍹 Sustaining energy levels and reducing fatigue⁣
⁣
🍹 And providing you with more stamina for labour, birth, postpartum, and beyond⁣ ⁣
⁣

RECIPE⁣
⁣
This makes one serve - you can multiply the recipe to make a larger batch, like I did in this reel⁣
⁣
1/2 cup coconut water⁣
1/2 cup 100% natural juice (no added sugar or other additives, chose organic if you have the option)⁣
1/4 teaspoon salt⁣
Magnesium powder (optional, but beneficial - aim for a dose of around a 50-80mg elemental magnesium per serve)⁣
⁣
If you prefer not to use juice or have any blood sugar concerns, you can either use 100% coconut water or half/half normal water & coco water⁣
⁣

TO MAKE:⁣
⁣
Stir or shake all ingredients together until salt and magnesium powder (if using) have dissolved. You can increase the recipe to make a larger batch - it can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.⁣

Take small sips from a water bottle of throughout labour, up to 3-4 serves within 24 hours⁣

🤱Postpartum & motherhood 🤱⁣

Drink 1-2 glasses daily, ideally in between main meals (i.e. morning tea and/or afternoon tea)⁣

I always imagined that if I were lucky enough to be pregnant again, it would be this wonderful opportunity to share what I know about having nourished, healthy, happy pregnancy.⁣
⁣
When you work online it’s hard not to see everything as an opportunity for *content* ⁣
And particularly when you work in the motherhood space, every lived experience you have as a mother feels intertwined with work.⁣
⁣
But, spoiler, it’s been nothing like that; nothing like I expected.⁣
⁣
Instead of sharing the glowing, nourished version of pregnancy I imagined, I’ve done very little sharing and a whole lot of just trying to survive.⁣
⁣
I’ve spent more time wishing for it to hurry up and be over than I have enjoying it, which after 3.5 years of TTC has been a pretty difficult feeling to have.⁣
⁣
I’ve watched countless biz plans & projects disappear this year as I’ve devoted what little energy and brain power I have to simply keeping up with my existing work & family responsibilities.⁣
⁣
I’ve been hamstrung by debilitating sickness, followed by chronic pain, followed by unrelenting winter illness, all topped off with a nice dose of insomnia, leaving me feeling pretty depleted and exhausted, to say the least.⁣
⁣
But one thing about me is that I’m a glass half full, silver linings kind of gal, and I believe there is usually something valuable to be gained from hard experiences
⁣
And this year has reminded me, yet again, that it’s the hard times in life that shape us, much more than the easy times.⁣
⁣
Take this account and all the work I’ve been doing to support mothers for the last 3 years - these wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the challenges I went through in early motherhood.⁣
⁣
So while this pregnancy was nothing like I expected, I know it wasn’t hard for nothing. When the seasons change and I return to work I know I’ll be bringing so much back with me to help me better support women & mothers - a deeper understanding, more compassion, and a greater appreciation for the challenges of fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and so much more.⁣

It’s hard to believe I’ve never done a proper

It’s hard to believe I’ve never done a proper introduction post on here before! Now feels like a good time, after my recent long hiatus due to pregnancy kicking my butt 🤢⁣

So Hi, 👋 If we haven’t met properly or you’re new around here, I’m Georgie, mother, naturopath and nutritionist, and cheerleader for mothers to create a version of motherhood for themselves that they love & enjoy.⁣

A few things you may or may not already know about me:⁣

🤰I’m currently 5 months pregnant with my 2nd baby and spent every day of the first 18 weeks miserably sick. Thankfully it seems to be behind me now!⁣

⁣
🩷 We were TTC this 2nd baby for 3.5 years, a journey full of heartbreak and frustration and grief. We still don’t know why it took so long, but were blessed with a surprise miracle shortly after we finally stopped trying and decided we were at peace with being one&done.⁣

🏡 I live in a beautiful area of Melbourne with my husband and 4 y/o daughter. We recently bought our first home - a one bedroom apartment (Melbourne property 🤯) that we absolute love and have found small space living to be much easier and more fun than we imagined.⁣

🥐 I’m what you might call a ‘normal’ naturopath - you’ll never hear me describe any food as ‘toxic’, I eat bread, dairy, meat, and sugar. I love a cocktail or two. And although it’s a bit of a cliche, I’m all about balance in life!⁣

🤱 My passion for working with mothers was born out of my own early motherhood experience, a time that was defined largely by what was happening with my daughters sleep (or lack thereof) and the exhaustion & depletion that came with it. ⁣

I noticed a woeful gap in the support being offered to sleep deprived mums, with almost no one talking about how mothers could protect & preserve their own wellbeing through the storm of broken sleep beyond fixing or changing their baby’s sleep.⁣

This lead me to create Mother Nourish, my online community membership for tired, sleep deprived, depleted mums!⁣

It’s not you, mama. It’s this: it’s society and its failure to hold women as they become mothers.⁣

It’s the erosion of inter generational support, which would’ve provided us with much needed guidance and wisdom as we navigated our way through one of life’s biggest rites of passage - matrescence.⁣
⁣
It’s the rise of individualistic values, pushing communities apart and leaving you isolated at home, mothering on your own, doing the work that would’ve traditionally shared by many, on your own. ⁣
⁣
It’s the economy that demands two working parents, forcing you out of the home and away from your baby.⁣
⁣
It’s traditional gender roles pigeon holing you into carrying the majority of domestic labour and leading you into inevitable burnout and resentment.⁣
⁣
And it’s the never ending judgement that leaves you constantly questioning every decision you make and disconnecting you from your biggest asset - your maternal instinct.⁣
⁣
Platitudes about maternal mental health, self care for mothers, and filling up our cups are absolutely useless until we talk about these bigger elephants in the room.⁣

The health of our mothers is the barometer for the health of our society, especially our future generation. And we need to do better for mothers.⁣
