What is naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a form of healthcare that places emphasis on using natural tools to support the body’s health. It is a distinct and complete system of health care that views the body holistically, aiming to identify and treat the underlying cause of illness rather than simply focusing on suppressing or stopping certain symptoms. Naturopathy works on the premise that the body is completely capable of restoring balanced health when given the right environment, conditions, and opportunities to flourish.
Naturopathic medicine draws primarily upon the use of the medicinal qualities of food, nutritional medicine (supplements), herbal medicine, and targeted lifestyle strategies to build vitality and optimise long-term health. It considers each person as an individual, acknowledging that there are many complex and often interconnected factors that contribute to the health and function of the body.
What conditions can naturopathy treat?
Many people are curious about what type of health conditions naturopathic medicine can help with when considering if it is the right approach for themselves and their families. The conditions that a naturopath can help with are as varied as the conditions that can arise in the body itself, and includes both acute and chronic presentations.
My particular areas of interest include:
- Gut health & digestive issues
- Mental health
- Children’s and family health
- Adolescent health
- Thyroid conditions
- Sleep disorders
- Diabetes and pre-diabetes
- Weight loss
- Behavioural issues, ASD, ADHD
- Autoimmune conditions
What is involved in an initial naturopathic consultation?
An initial naturopathic consultation is a long-form appointment of between 75 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the nature of your health concern and your age or the age of your child. Your initial appointment will usually be longer than any subsequent appointments to allow enough time to cover your entire health picture and history.
In your initial appointment, I will ask many questions spanning across all of your body systems and your history. As the nature of individual health care is complex and highly personalised, it is necessary to understanding the full story of each person so that treatment is specific and is accurately targeted towards addressing the underlying cause.
We will also discuss your diet and lifestyle and I may perform a series of physical examinations to deepen my understanding of your health. The need for any additional testing or further investigations will also be discussed.
All initial appointments include:
- Review of your current health concern
- Review of your past health history and prior medical conditions
- Review of other body systems relevant to your current health concern
- A comprehensive review of lifestyle and dietary factors
- Relevant physical examinations
- Discussion about the need for further testing and the best treatment directions
When is treatment commenced?
Your initial appointment is like a ‘fact-finding’ session that involves a lot of discussion about your health and body so that the full picture is obtained. Often additional time following the initial appointment is needed for further testing or a comprehensive analysis of your health to be completed. This is particularly true of complex or chronic conditions. In these cases, initial treatment may not be commenced until the follow-up appointment.
A follow-up consultation is scheduled for 1-2 weeks after the initial assessment. This session allows time to finalise any assessments, to evaluate any test results you may have received, for a detailed discussion about your health and the best treatment options, and for ongoing support and monitoring of any current treatments.
